Making Jesus Christ known in Oak Park and around the world.

HELLO CALVARY,

This coming Sunday, September 8, marks the end of the Steady On: Finding Strength in the Book of Hebrews series at Calvary. Together we have learned about the excellency of Christ and his benefits, and how these benefits enable us to persevere in the Christian faith when times get hard.

To commemorate and celebrate our journey through the book of Hebrews, which began in February of this year, we will have an extended time of sharing during our services. Microphones will be placed at the front of the sanctuary, and anyone who would like to speak about how they have been impacted by the Steady On series is invited to come forward and recount how God has ministered to them in a unique or meaningful way through this study.

As a means of reviewing all that we have covered in this Epistle to the Hebrews, I encourage you to watch the video above, which has been produced by The Bible Project.

I trust that you will enjoy your time of reflection on this series and I look forward to hearing from many of you on Sunday.

Thankfully yours,
PASTOR GERALD

Our NEW LOOK

As you arrive at church this weekend, you will notice the scaffolding around our building. This has been put up as we have some loose tiles that could pose a danger for our congregation or neighbors walking by. Setting this structure up now will also allow us to address that area first when repairs begin. As for a status on our roof repair project, we have been talking with our insurance company for the past few months and expect to have some answers from them shortly.  We have also been working with a tile supply company (for replacement tiles) and the Village of Oak Park.

CALVARY CONNECT LUNCH

All are encouraged to join us for a Mediterranean-themed lunch this Sunday, following the second service. We are excited about how God is at work in our church, the Oak Park community, and around the world. We use these gatherings to share updates and introduce you to the many ways you can get connected at Calvary, all while enjoying a delicious meal.

If you are new to Calvary, there is no cost for your meal—lunch is on us. For regular attenders, the cost is $5/per person or $15/per family.

SCRIPTURE: WISDOM FROM GOD'S WORD

How should we read the Bible? Does God speak to us today through His Word? How does the authority of scripture relate to modern questions? Most Christians know that they ought to believe and trust the Bible, but questions remain about how to approach and think about the Bible today. Others among us find the Bible intimidating and overwhelming and don’t know where to start when we read God’s Word.

Join us for our first Calvary Core class, Scripture: Wisdom from God’s Word. In this class we will explore questions related to the nature of the Bible, its authority and interpretation, its overall story, and how to access the riches of God’s Word for our own lives today.

WHAT IS A CHRISTIAN?
To answer this requires that we understand the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Whether you are just considering Christianity or are a new Christian, this class aims to make clear the amazing truth of God's salvation and what it means to be identified with Christ. Questioners are welcomed!

We will meet together on Sunday, September 22 at 8:30AM in the Heritage Room (Rm 104). Breakfast will be provided. Childcare is available through our regularly scheduled Calvary Kids programming.

2019 CPT CONFERENCE

Techne: A Christian Vision of Technology | October 14-16 | Calvary Memorial Church

The modern world presents Christians in general and pastors in particular with many profound and complex questions related to a biblical vision of and for technology. The rate of technological advancement in human culture has accelerated significantly in the last 200 years, and then accelerated again in the past 20. How should Christians think about smartphones? Artificial intelligence? Genetic technologies? Multi-site church? Virtual reality? Contraceptive technology? Social media?

The 2019 CPT Conference will seek to address these questions through the lenses of biblical wisdom, the historical Christian tradition, modern sociology, and ministry praxis.

Calvary attendees are welcome to participate, and may enter the promotional code “Calvary” to get access to a $75/individual ticket and a $39/student ticket.
