How has God brought you to where you are today?

We arrived in Mazamari, Peru in 1985 to work with the Ashaninka people group. Our role was leadership development through discipleship and by directing and teaching in the Ashaninka Bible Institute of the Ashaninka Church Association. Because of terrorism that centered in this area of Peru, we left in 1990, but continued to work with the institute from a distance, preparing teachers and curriculum. We turned over direction and teaching of the institute to the church association in 1995. Twenty-eight years after leaving Mazamari, God has allowed us to return to serve the Ashaninka people we love, although in a different capacity

What is God doing in your immediate context?

When we moved back here we had ministry plans that we believed were of the Lord. However, we found that discord within the Ashaninka Church was at such an intense level that we could not simply move into ministry as we had hoped. We have spent quite a lot of time observing, asking questions, and being sensitive to the Spirit's leading to ways in which we can facilitate reconciliation and cooperation between the factions in the church. We see some steps in the right direction but one individual, the president of the church association, does not seem to want reconciliation.

Our hope is that eventually we can put in motion the ministry aspcts that we came prepared to do: 1. Offer refresher courses to institute teachers 2. Update the buildings of the center so they can better serve the Ashaninka 3. Facilitate the OT translation project through printing and distribution of OT portions and courses about how to use the OT and NT together in preaching and teaching.

How does your partnership with Calvary help you be more effective in your work?

Calvary, as our biggest support donor, is key to our remaining in Peru and in ministry. The prayer support we consistently get from CMC fuels the ministry we do. The personal contact through Calvary personnel encourages us to keep our relationship with the Lord vibrant and to continue to obediently serve our Lord.

How can people stay connected with you and your ministry, e.g. email newsletter, blog, social media?

  • The best way to stay connected with us is via email:
  • We send out a monthly email update, which is ministry-informative, but which is less formally written than our official prayer letters sent by snail mail 3-4 times a year. Anyone can be added to either or both mailing lists by a request sent to the email above.
  • If anyone wants to be friends with us on Facebook, they might learn a bit more about who we are and how we think, although we don’t put critical information on our pages. They can send a “friend” request to David L Powell or Rachael Powell.
  • Rachael's WhatApp #: +51 950 907 808 also works well.
