How has God brought you to where you are today?

I (James) left Chicago for Bogotá, Colombia on September 4, 2002 because God made it clear to “Go.” Prior to that I had no interest in being a missionary. I was single, I “loved” God and I “loved” sports but admittedly, I loved me most of all. My primary focus was my career, finding a wife, and raising a family. After a few years of frustration working in the Health Club industry my good friend and pastor Howard Duncan helped me understand that if I can surrender my life to God that I could also surrender my career to God. I had no clue what God had in store for me other than the first step was serving as teacher and basketball coach at El Camino Academy (ECA). While coaching at ECA God opened some doors to minister to coaches and athletes that I was competing against. That’s when God planted the vision in me to start the first-ever international branch of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Now we are in 60 countries. Being a ministry leader requires constant surrender to His plan, not my own.

What is God doing in your immediate context?

If you are not familiar with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes our vision is simple: To impact the world for Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes. We achieve this through our 4 C’s of ministry: Coaches, Camps, Campus, and Community including Church Planting. To that end, in the last 10 years we have expanded the ministry from serving 48 athletes in an area of Bogotá called the “Belt of Misery” to now over 12,000 coaches and athletes in 10 major cities throughout both Colombia and Venezuela. Those cities include; Armenia, Barranquilla, Bogotá, Cali, Cartagena, Cúcuta, Barquisimeto, Caracas, Maracaibo, and Valencia.

How does your partnership with Calvary help you be more effective in your work?

If it weren’t for Calvary, I don’t think I would have made the leap of faith in 2002 to become a full-time missionary. Calvary has been a loyal financial and prayer warrior for me as well as helping me further my Bible Studies at Moody Bible Institute. I don’t get to travel back to Chicago as often as I would like but when I do it is always encouraging to know that I have “Team Calvary” behind us… Now we just need some coaches and athletes to come down and help us in some sports camps and clinics.

How can people stay connected with you and your ministry, e.g. email newsletter, blog, social media?

Since I travel frequently between three countries the best way to reach me is via email at . I send out quarterly Newsletters and monthly eNews highlighting testimonies of those impacted through the ministry.

We have our main FCA website (, which highlights the overall ministry of FCA predominately within the United States, but we have our own website at
